Introduction
Allow me to introduce myself, I may be many things but I think of myself as a sculptor above everything else. My first 3- dimensional work was a reclining horse, in oak, which achieved a Highly commended ticket at a London Schools Art Exhibition when I was thirteen or fourteen years old. I lost sight of this work but I was told that our art master had it in his personal collection after he retired, so it must have showed some promise. R J Puttick was his name, he was Slade educated, tutored by the great Henry Tonks, and must be long past, but if anyone has the horse……..
Direct carving in wood has remained my favourite medium.
(More of this in the “Wood” section.)
Virtually all of my work is material led. That is, I am an inveterate scavenger and collector of interesting bits and pieces and I am very keen on recycling and transmutation. Some stuff sits around for years before I can decide, or more often, it comes to me, what is going to be made.
(More of this in the relevant sections.)
This means of course, that some may find an inconsistency of “style” in my work. To me that is irrelevant. I’ve always wanted to do everything, and in that pursuit have been nothing but consistent. I hope that I have done some things well. Commercial success has never been that important to me, but I like people to like what I do.
The galleries I now throw open for, hopefully, your pleasure. And would be purchasers are more than welcome to get in contact.
