Stone I have not been so lucky with, it being harder to pick up than wood, in both respects. Some of the lumps I’ve gathered have turned out to be virtually uncarvable, and recycled old masonry is harder to work than newly quarried. I didn’t have much experience of the techniques until late in life, so I have few pieces to show. Included in the Stone gallery are pieces carved from cement building blocks. I now sometimes have to buy these but all my earlier stuff (mostly gone and unrecorded in the digital age) was from recycled materials. The blocks are fragile in their natural state so I have developed a method of strengthening, preserving and finishing them to almost metamorphise the material. I’ve also developed a material I call ‘alaplaster’.
